The primary aim of the Kartographer project is to produce a simple interactive educational atlas program for the KDE environment. The atlas will have the choice of a 3D spherical view or various standard flat map projections (Mercator, Philips, etc). A number of different map themes will be available, such as topographic, political and ecology. Connected to the atlas will be a Fact Book with national information, statistical data, and links to informative and reliable web-sites.

Kartographer has been through a number of experimental versions, where it's scope has been whittled down from a high-detail combined Encarta-killer and full-blown GIS to the simpler version currently under development. To see how it's changed, where it is currently at, and where it's heading, take a look at the News, Screenshots and Features pages.

A public v0.1 release will be made once these basic features are implemented:
* Basic spherical vector map
* Basic flat vector map (cylindrical projections only, e.g Mercator)
* Basic themes (i.e. selection of surface images)
* Basic place names on map (country names, capitals, major cities).
* Ability to select a country with the mouse
* Right-click menu for fact book & web-links
* Basic country data & stats display using CIA data import
* Basic gazetteer display using GNIS data import

A pre-release v0.0.1 will be out soon, after I finish a code simplification and clean-up. This will simply display the 3D or flat view with a single theme and no other features. Further pre-leases may be made as functional features are completed.
